When you get an email asking if you can be at the track tomorrow to photograph the first 2012 ZL1 Camaro breaking into the 10s, you don’t ask too many questions. When we rolled into Milan Dragway in Milan, Michigan, and met up with Mike Copeland of Lingenfelter Performance Engineering (LPE), the questions we figured you would want to ask started flowing.

The ZL1 that wore the Lingenfelter banner at the track had minimal modifications. The only underhood upgrades was the LPE was outfitted with were a supercharger pulley to bump up the boost, reflashed ECM, 160-degree thermostat and a LPE ported and polished airintake leading to a K&N air filter. The only other modifications to the car were swapping out the street performance tires for skinnies up front and Nitto NT05R drag radials out back.

This very car had run 11.03 at 130 mph at Muncie Dragway. With great air temperatures and the Milan track team prepping the starting line, it looked like a promising day.

The first pass was decent, posting an 11.22. During the next series of passes, an assortment of launched styles, shift points and tire air pressure showed varied results.

Although no one was complaining about making passes at a dragstrip for a couple of hours, the team could only capture an 11.11 at 128 mph during this track outing.

So, the illusive 10-second ZL1 Camaro is still illusive! But the crew at Lingenfelter vows to be back, and soon, to try to be the first!

The only thing under hood on the Lingenfelter Performance Engineering (LPE) ZL1 Camaro that hints that the car is not stock is the polished air intake tube and open-element K&N air filter. A more trained eye will also notice that he supercharger pulley is not stock, which increases boost 3-4 psi over stock.

To help with traction, A set of Nitto NT05R drag radials were bolted on the rear of the car. These are P305/45R18s, while a pair of 5.50-17 tires up remove the drag of wide front tires.

interesting. how much boost did the pulley give and what kind of tune is on the ECM. more curious as to the actual dyno graph on it.

If you saw the previous post with the dyno graphs it looked like in stock form it was making a max of 8psi of boost. Add the 3 - 4psi of boost per what the article said in Hot Rod and you would have approximately 11 - 12psi of boost. Nice runs LPE!

The cold air intake looks like it fits perfect and probably makes great power with this alone.

Now we're getting somewhere. Simple mods really made a great time.

Tob 04-14-2012 12:57 PM

Wait. Was proper break-in followed?

SRT8Tech 04-14-2012 12:57 PM

Ahhhhhh, running VP109 fuel. Even so, for just a pulley change, tune and CAI thats pretty damn impressive. Not just the times but the trap speed..............

boxmonkeyracing 04-14-2012 12:58 PM

I got my wish. lol. so a 2.0 60' would net around an 11.8. so yea.

2ndCamaro79 04-14-2012 12:59 PM

That was sweet, but if your going to mod a ZL1 to go fast straight, would your money be better spent on a SS?

Very nice if that is really 3-4 more psi and for the mods .. .. cheap mods and big gains :)

Sorry if I missed them in another post, but what were the baseline times?

that would be Henessey times not LPE. the base line LPE did was dyno charts and it is in another thread.

This vehicle was not baseline tested at the track.

Graham.

So I have on order a Yellow ZL1 in Michigan, that may get pushed back to a '13! Any info on if I can get some of these mods on mine before I bring her home?? And cost?? Sorry a little new at this! I had an 02 SS with the Stage 2 SLP Package, but any info on how to contact Lingenfelter would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

2010 SSRS 04-14-2012 01:17 PM

GEEo 04-14-2012 01:22 PM

Now thats Impressive!!

zadjaliz 04-14-2012 01:24 PM

Impressive!!! Run was made with vp109 fuel or 93octane? Any videos?

Luvpilot 04-14-2012 01:29 PM

VP109

Check the dyno chart

2ndCamaro79 04-14-2012 01:29 PM

If getting power is that easy why did GM, just not do these things from the start?? Or why don't the 2013s come with a pully change and better cold air unit so you don't have to loose the warranty on a 60K car??

GunnyG 04-14-2012 01:32 PM

That's awesome! Can't wait to see it break into the 10's. Car is definitely capable! Good luck, happy modding, and safe racing!
