LETHAL RACING- TH400 INSTALL

Hi,

For a while now ive been wanting to put an auto trans in my M6 camaro due to not being able to get the 1/4 mile time i would like to see it run. I decided to go with the TH400 due to it being tough as nails and a fairly easy swap with no wiring. The BMR thread is great but i think i can help further with a little more info and pictures. My Camaro is making 720rwhp/690rwtq via Our NightFury cam, ECS centri kit, meth , and a ZL1 fuel pump. It has full BMR suspension and drive shaft loop.

so here what is needed.....

TH400- This one is built with some race clutches and a few hardened internals.

JW bell housing, Not necessary, but adding this bell housing is 600x's stronger than the cast bell. JW does make a bell that has the LS block blot pattern which uses 6 bolt holes, but since i already had the regular JW bell, i used it. It bolts up using 5 bolt holes. It is SFI certified.

Aluminum deep trans pan- again, not necessary, but it adds stregth and an extra 3 quarts of fluid.

Lokar flexable dipstick- perfect length!

B&M hi-tech trans cooler- A must! A good trans cooler is the life of your trans, especially with a stall

PTC 3500 stall- This stall is loose and will stall to nearly 4k on the street with drag radials. This stall was discussed with PTC with the info of the car, etc..

TCI flexplate- this crosses over the LS crank bolt pattern to the TH400 stall converter pattern. It is SFI ertified to 8k

B&M Proshifter with reverse lockout- mounted in the stock location using a simple aluminum plate.

DSS drive shaft adaptor- this allows the new 1 peice drive shaft to bolt to the stock rearend

Custom made drive shaft- Our neighbors next door to us @ USA DRIVELINE came over once everything was bolted up and took a measurement then made me a 3.5", .120 wall aluminum driveshaft. This thing is a work of art! rated for big HP!

reusing the stock trans mount and BMR safty loop of course! The BMR loop falls exactly where it needs to be for a solid drivshaft

Lastly, a shop or experianced person with knowlege of this type of project.

This isnt the tranny for all imho. it turns 2800rpms@70mph. I put this in to race the car, but drives great in town and on the hwy, it just turns some rpms. It would be the same on the hwy as running the M6 in 4th gear(1:1)

The STOCK SPEEDO STILL WORKS! its just off by a few mph but we will try to recalibrate it. the only CEL that needs to be turned off is the low vehicle speed sensor voltage code due to it not being plugged in. other than that, no dash lights!:headbang:

The clutch pedal was diconnected from the hydraulic rod and the pedal is set against the floor board.

very nice...really.

Nick thanks for sharing you did an awesome job. Several have done this swap, but have not really shared much information. I have been on the fence for a while and you just gave me the push I needed. Nothing like an auto to run some good consistent numbers at the track. Nick can you either PM me or post little more information on the electronic connections, speedo, trans temp, traction control, reverse light and what ever else needs to be turned off or on in the tune. Thanks

BLACK10 12-18-2012 09:04 PM

I have not turned off anything in the tune! I just had to clear 1 code so far and it has not come back on .Stabilitrac and traction control seem to still work fine. The speedo began to work normally after a few miles. I believe the ABS system takes over for the speedo and traction control.

To sum it up, all I did was tape up all the plugs on the harness that went to the m6 trans and I tucked the harness up behind the ABS box by the firewall. No cels, speedo works fine!

Looks killer. But can you clarify something for me? I'm old skool, TH400 and TH350 equipped cars were my rides back when muscle meant a 25 year old car made before emission controls, and having a detent cable that wasn't on the carb made folks scratch their heads

I associate 'bell housing' with a manual box. Do you mean you installed a type of case girdle around the front of the trans case? I've only broken theses trans, never built one ;)

Nick thanks for your help :coolpics:...With your power, I predict 10.30s with a 1.50s 60 foot. :headbang: Hopefully faster, keep us posted.

very nice man, can't wait to see what she will do at the track, what are you gonna do with the m6 and clutch

Jason@JacFab 12-19-2012 08:19 PM

Very cool... How much did it cost to do this, if you don't mind me asking?

Hi

Yes, the housing area that bolts to the engine.

You can see the JW BELL in these pics. You have to cut the factory bell part off the trans.

Paul,
I'll hang on to it to swap it back in when I want to take a road trip:thumbsup:

ChrisBlair 12-20-2012 05:48 PM

OK, I get it now. Didn't see the seam in the previous pics. Thanks

sspaul 12-20-2012 07:08 PM

$4300.00 in parts is not a bad price at all

Can't wait!!! I see you guys posting some great times. What I love about the T400 is that you still keep the fun factor of shifting your own tranny down the 1/4.
