Converting from points dissy to a H.E.i

Hey guys I have a 67 camaro with a old point style distributor in it. How easy would it be to convert to a H E I? What all steps are involved in this switch? I've always wanted to do this switch but I'm not sure what it requires? Thanks for the input!

One can buy the "breakerless" kits that convert from points to electronic. Or do you really want to go HEI? If so, I have no idea (and don't personally like those monsters). If not, the Mallory breakerless kits drop right in to your points distributor easily. Pertroniks(sp) make them, too.

basicly you have to bypass the resistor wire that feeds the stock dist. and supply a 12 volt feed from you ignition switch to the H.E.I. unit. the stock set-up starts with 12 volts but once the start procedure is complete it goes down to 9.5 volts to run. electronic ignition needs a full 12 volts.

The Pertronix is pretty easy to install. Just remove the points and mount it where they were. There is 2nd wire that, as stated above you have to hook to a 12V source and NOT the resistor wire already there. Also have to have the Pertronix low resistance coil for it to work properly. That was the first thing I did to my car when I got it. Woke it up a little too!

I'm pretty sure the Mallory uses the stock resistor wire and coil.?.? I know the Unilite distributor does...

What Chvyman said about the resistor wire. After that, if you want to spring for an MSD 6A/AL ignition, it basically removes all the electronic guts from the HEI removing most of the shortcomings of that system. I had this on my 68 Camaro and it was flawless. Another point to consider is you may need to clearance the firewall to fit the cap. I used a 2X4 and sledge to move the firewall back about 1/4".

I did this back in 1979 when the HEI came out. Easy mod.
1. Remove the resistor( or resister wire) and replace with standard gauge wire.
2. Install the HEI. Power wire to the BAT terminal. Install a ground wire to negative side of coil and ground.

Done.

The resistance wire, if I remember right, had a cloth covering on it? It's been awhile since I did it.

Yes. White cloth cover with orange and purple stripes.
