Oil pump kaput!

Just like that, I go outside bright and early this morning and fire up the SS to go to Dallas Cars and Coffee and NO OIL PRESSURE!! So I check the oil, and look for leaks,,,,all ok. Buddy comes by and we do the look in the oil fill tube for oil movement and nothing! The POS oil pump checked out.......Long story short, tow truck to the house and straight to the shop! :emoticon1:

Had you done a cam change or anything? I haven't heard about LS3 oil pump failures being a problem although any mechanical system can fail.

biggerisbetter 03-03-2013 06:37 AM

wow that would really suck

biggerisbetter 03-03-2013 06:38 AM

at least you are smart enough to look at ur gauges. im sure there are many that would have wrecked an engine

Look around this site. There are countless threads on oil pump failure on the SS. Many elect to go with a Melling aftermarket setup once the stock one goes belly up.

Go with the Melling and don't look back. Numerous guys are swapping to them when doing cam swaps and having zero issues.

gafool 03-03-2013 05:14 PM

so can u switch it with out having cams just a swap out?

VADER SS L99 03-03-2013 05:50 PM

This was a LS3 right? I also want to know if the cam has been changed.

litle88 03-03-2013 05:57 PM

Yes this is an LS3 LPE750 with cam, supercharger and all sorta junk. What sucks is the car only has 18k on the clock!

Moe55 03-03-2013 11:13 PM

I've heard this was more of a problem in the 2010 models. Is this true??

Nightmare2012 03-03-2013 11:26 PM

I heard l99s have a better oil.pump is this true?

Yes thats the word and mine is an early 2010, bought in Nov 2009. And yes the L99 have a higher volume pump than the LS3. I've read that the L99 pump is GM'S high performance pump equivalent to the Melling. Who knows?? I'm going with the L99 pump.

Moe55 03-03-2013 11:40 PM

Yeah especially the early 2010 models is what I remember reading. Hope you get it worked out man.

Fast6.3 03-03-2013 11:48 PM

Yes the l99 is a high volume pump but the melling is still a better pump if you want to run a stock pump get the slp or katech ported and blueprinted pumps i have the melling

rare991 03-03-2013 11:55 PM

why is the l99 a higher volume pump?

I'm assuming because of the VVT...

rare991 03-04-2013 12:00 AM

so you get a better pump for a weaker link... makes no sense. I have an L99 and I cant wait to get the LS3 conversion

gnturboray 03-04-2013 12:13 AM

yeah I know it sounds crazy but that seems to be the case. L99 pumps are better than the LS3 pumps.:crutch:

ITGuy11 03-04-2013 12:29 AM

Get the Melling.

I have yet to hear about a L99 pump failure. If anyone knows of 1 post it up especially a stock internal car that could not have been installed wrong with a cam upgrade.
