3.91 in a Manual LLT

I know the 3.91 gears can be put in the V6 w/manual transmission, so the stupid questions is, can I do a swap with a SS rear differential instead of removing my rear differential and putting in the gears.

SSMickey 03-17-2013 07:59 PM

The SS diff does not come stock with 3.91 gears unless you get one out of a 1LE or a previously modded SS.

The shop already has some upgraded to 3.91 gears. Was just wondering if all they had to do is is to swap the diff.

Gears are in and so far feeling pretty good, doing the break-in.

How much did the gears change the overall feel of the car? Notice any major difference in mpg or anything like that?

jbrantner24 05-18-2013 01:18 AM

I'm more interested how 3.91s will affect our 1/4 mile times. Will it make the car feel faster with more shifts or will it actually be faster.

Yeah I'm curious as well? Any updates to how this feels/affects performance?

Haven't had it on the track yet, rpm wise, I'm now at 2100 rpm when doing 60 in sixth gear. So if you do a lot of highway driving it may not be for you but feels better (mentioned to someone with the SS and 3.91 and it gives you the feeling of the car being lighter).

JCunningham 07-16-2013 01:55 PM

2100rpm @60mph with 3.91? are you on stock size tires? I thought it was supposed to be only a 180rpm increase around 1700rpm

sycraft 07-16-2013 02:20 PM

on the track i would have to shift another time, so it would probably be slower. I am almost at redline in 3rd in the 1/4 now...

But on the street it would feel faster

Stock tire size.

How does first gear feel like, and does the shop you bought them at have any more? Who tuned the car for you?

Your not in 1st for long, much easier driving in the city.

ADM did the install, don't know if they have anymore.

Vince/Trifecta updated my tune.

JCunningham 07-16-2013 11:26 PM

well i wont be doing 3.91 if its a 600rpm increase at 60. my car is between 60 and 65 all the time 75 on the hiway. whats the math. because in my truck if you went from 3.42 to 4.10 it wasn't anywhere near 600rpm.

JCunningham 07-17-2013 03:49 AM

i didnt know the LT came with a different trany gear set. sorry. I was thinking the SS gear set.

3.91s in an automatic SS with a mild converter will get you about .5 - .6 in the quarter. 21st Century advised me against 3.91s in an SS manual tranny car, The 3.01 first gear with a 3.91 rear gear is just TOO low.

JCunningham 12-30-2013 01:36 AM

funny 3.91s in a manual SS is perfect if you ask anyone els.

The auto tranny has a lot lower 1st gear than the manual tranny SS.
3.91s are the factory gear for the manual 1LE Camaro.

Just learned the 1LE tranny gearing is different. Pontiac G8 GXP is the same as the SS though and they come with 3.70 gears with shorter tires.
