Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Named 2013 All-Star By Automobile Magazine

Just as the Subaru BRZ stretches the sports car concept in one direction, so, too, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 expands it in another. This is a seriously large car, measuring 190.4 inches in overall length on a wheelbase of 112.3 inches. You can feel every one of this car's 4120 pounds as if you had carried them yourself to the ZL1's assembly plant in Oshawa, Ontario.

So what can you say about a 580-hp car? That sometimes 500 hp just isn't enough? As you'd expect, the ZL1 is very quick, as only something capable of tearing through the quarter mile in twelve seconds can be. Yet the miracle of the Camaro ZL1 is your ability to control it. It's not refinement we're talking about (although it indeed is wonderfully refined), but instead the ability to command 580 hp and make use of so much muscle in appropriate circumstances. That is to say that you can look out of the ZL1's windshield at the dragway or racetrack and think to yourself, "I have a dead-solid, 50/50 chance of making it through this without bursting into a ball of flame." We could go on about the miracle of the supercharged V-8, a powerplant as stout as any crate engine from GM Performance Parts. We could go on about the chassis, which actually rides more comfortably than any lesser Camaro when you dial the mode for the adaptive dampers to the Tour setting. We could say that this car is so drivable even with the six-speed manual transmission and the heavy-effort clutch pedal that the oldest and most feeble of us (yr. obt. svt.) was able to negotiate three hours of bumper-to-bumper rush-hour traffic in L.A. without harming either himself or anyone else. But what you really want to know is what it's like to engage launch control and feel the 305/35YR-20 Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G:2 rear tires hook up at the starting line with barely a scratch, or what it's like to lean on the throttle coming out of a corner and feel the car simply rush forward without a stutter as the electronics modulate engine torque 1000 times per second. Well, this particular Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 carries a sticker price of $59,240. Anyone can buy one.

Cool! :)

I am proud to own one!

That's what happens when you get am all around excellent vehicle. A 580 hp daily drivable vehicle was science fiction about 10 years ago. And who would have ever thought that a Camaro would keep up so well on a road course as well.

A quote from the article.

"That is to say that you can look out of the ZL1's windshield at the dragway or racetrack and think to yourself, "I have a dead-solid, 50/50 chance of making it through this without bursting into a ball of flame."

What makes me love this article more than anything is the fact that there is one car not on the list! Anybody wanna take a guess? Some automaker who shall remain unnamed, focused a bit too much on one number (HP) and a lot less on the other (satisfied buyers). In fact how many positive reviews has this "other car" recieved over the past year? How many awards? I actually haven't seen a single one on the road. I hope this one doesn't bother the trolls.

If you're referring to the latest rendition of the GT500, then I have seen plenty of them on the roads and up at GLD tearing ass.

Great article.

Based on the price/performance comparison...why in the world would anyone buy a Boxster???

Sven59 05-23-2013 11:42 AM

I think this car will go down as one of the best muscle cars in history.

many people say the same about the camaro :noidea:

nice, the Camaro is a fun car to drive, and looks killer on the street hope the 6G made it as well dont make sence to me to buy a 50.000 $ camaro but may its because I never ride a zl1 but still that car prove that is somethig out of this world

good job GM! :first:

I just think that every car in the world is special in its own way... I think GM realice the zl1 was about a new standar in muscle cars, you can make a 600 with some money... but it will be almost impossible to build a car that can race at track and be a DD as the zlfun...

Because they are more comfortable than briefs?

No surprise there, 100% muscle with creature comforts. For the money, its the best ride in town.:amen:

I HAD A 69 Z28 I BOUGHT IN JAN 71 AFTER MY SECOND TOUR. SPENT @$1000 IN MODS TO THE ENGINE OFF Road Z28 CHEVY CAM 12.5 PISTONS ETC. IT WAS A FUN CAR BUT IN NO WAY AS SOPHISTICATED AS MY 2013 ZL1 VERT.
LOVED THEM BOTH But WILL B GLAD TO DRIVE THE VERT 100K MILES AND NO REAL NEED TO HOT ROD IT...I DO HAVE A 75 RWHP KIT FROM JANETTY RACING TO INSTAL. JUST FOR THE HELL OF IT!!

#737 ZL1 05-23-2013 04:43 PM

something special about the 69 Z/28. Through the years I have owned a few dozen all stock original 68 & 69 Z/28 cars and all I can say is they look better and better as time goes on. The Camaro is special, always has been always will be.

Fraxum 05-23-2013 07:49 PM

Nice blurb. Except the part saying "Anyone can buy one". Automobile is out of touch.

OldScoolCamaro 05-23-2013 10:27 PM

More kudos for the ZL1, as if we didn't already know...:first:
