add 3.91 gears in my camaro L99

hello friends, well I wanted to know what the advantages of having 3.91 gears. good in terms of launching from 0 to 60mph, and that changes in top speed? gains some wrhp?? can help me to clarify these doubts??

caverman 06-05-2013 04:53 PM

Torque...or the feel of....Yes. HP....none.

You might have more problems launching because it will probably smoke the tires way more. Consider 3.70 gears.

+1 for 3.70 gears

3.70 would be good?? The Camaro 1LE has 3.91 gears, right?? the release will be harmed with 3.91 gears? I'm thinking of doing this mod, to improve launch 0A 60mph or 1/4 mile. thanks for the explanation

the_fast_one 06-05-2013 05:24 PM

The 1le has 3.91 but it has different gears in the tranny to off set it. Most auto are going to 3.70 do to the gears inside the auto tranny.

What are the stock L99 gears - 3.27 or 3.45? What are the gains over them by going to 3.70? Does changing gearing require a tune?

Lgndryhr 06-05-2013 05:44 PM

Auto should upgrade to 3.70
Manual should upgrade to 3.91

Motion427 06-05-2013 07:09 PM

Stock L99 gears would be 3.27
Tune would be required for the speedometer to be accurate aswell for the tranny to shift correctly.

I found to buy 3.73 and 3.70, which would be better?? the site has phastek 3.91 to automatic, http://www.phastekperformance.com/20...-gears-391.htm!! what suggestion do you have?? what changes in 0/60mph with 3.73 or 3.91 gears?? top speed decreases or increases?? can affect it?? or could benefit the top speed?? before this mod, I need to have this information, thank you for the comments guys.

OP one way to checkout your question is to see what people are running using the setup you are talking about...... I hope this helps out....

Also check the Fast List and see what is working

Only do the 3.91's if you are cammed or have a triple disk aftermarket converter. Otherwise do like others said and get the 3.70's. I dont consider wheel spin from 3.91 gears to be the biggest issue as you could always use bigger and stickier tires. Its the fact that it forces a shift into 5th too soon if you dont have a cam with a higher redline or triple disk converter that can be locked up at WOT.

thank you, with 3.91 can hurt top speed ... better off for 3.70!!

Motion427 06-06-2013 06:21 AM

Shouldn't hurt top speed with 3.91's. It would take alot of HP to reach redline in 6th gear for sure.

bhillakaiceberg 06-06-2013 10:09 AM

Im thinking about doing 3.70 Gears as well.

This lower (higher numerically) ratio rear drive gear will increase effective rear wheel torque multiplication in 2010 - 2013 SS Camaros by 13% (over standard 3.45 ratio) in a manual tansmission-equipped car, and 20% (over standard 3.27) in an automatic-equipped car. This gearset is the original equipment ratio found in the 1LE 2013 Camaro package.

NOTE: This change will affect the indicated vehicle speed. Recalibration is required for accurate speedometer reading.

You're more than welcome

I'm using 3.91 gears with all the below mods and Nitto NT05 tires 315 / 35 rear. No issues at all

3.91 gears will increase torque multiplication across all gears. Or in laymans terms, your engine will spin faster in the same amount of time as it would with the stock 3.27 gears. I think that the car will be hard to hook in 1st gear, maybe half of second, just my speculation. Now you'd hit top speed quicker because your engine will RPM quicker.

You shouldn't see an increase in RWHP, in fact those gears will eat up a little HP.

IMO the gears would be fun from a roll.

axis 07-27-2013 12:14 AM

They would have zero affect on your top speed. Our cars have the gears to go over 250mph. We just don't have the HP or aero to get there. They would affect your cruise rpm, thus MPG. By how much, I don't know.
