How to get gas.

I'll start by saying that I am an idiot :frusty: How do you fill up the tank without having to stand there holding the nozzle? :iono:

Eat chili, baked beans and drink beer. You shouldn't need to hold your nozzle then to get gas.

I swear I'm starting a thread one day where I list a thread title and then my instant reaction just to the title.

In this case it was "Eat Brocoli"

But to the question, you mean when it doesn't have the automatic catch like they used to/are supposed to? I wedge the gas cap in there so I don't have my hand soaking up gas fumes and stinking all day after.

:word:
if the nozzle doesnt have a lever to hold the handle up then wedge your gas cap in the handle

Guys, I don't think the OP is incompetent.

Don't feel bad, I too had problems...
My '10 SS was really finicky - some nozzles just would not set and I had to hold them. I would try several different positions, but sometimes the nozzle just would not cooperate. It was more the exception than the rule that a nozzle would set so I could gas up hands free.

LikaRokBowTie 12-11-2013 08:56 PM

To be honest you should be standing right there any time you're fueling a car,but there are little catches usually 2-3 positions that will hold the lever in place for you.The first is slow and the others allow for faster flow,I'm sure someone can post a pic for you.

Move to Oregon where they pump your gas for you. It's the law there to promote low paying jobs. I hated it....

Jersey is the same way. How stupid is it that one can't pump their own gas? :emoticon1:

I didn't know about this and gassed up myself the first time - how I don't
know, but never again thereafter.

This thread is win

Nutro 12-11-2013 11:14 PM

I think the OP means why does the pump keep kicking off because the nozzle depth is wrong.

:frusty:
You move to New Jersey where we aren't allowed to pump our own gas and now I understand why.

Comrando 12-12-2013 05:41 AM

We stopped in New Jersey from New York city to Chicago and the attendant didn't have the brains to know the tank was only half full with 8 gallons. The card could only be for fuel once a day.

So that was a fail. Why would anyone with Illinois plates be stopping for half a tank in New Jersey? 800 miles and 12 hours to make the trip.

On the positive side we stumbled on a great breakfast place and had another card to use so we found a 2-lane in upstate NY. Where the heck did Utica come from?

Road trips are always an adventure, especially in a Camaro

My early '10 SS had the short fat tether therefore you couldn't do this. It wouldn't even fit onto the hook on the fuel door to hold it. The trick was to tie one of those elastic hair ponies to it so you could hang it on the hook while you pumped. They changed this to a longer thinner tether sometime later in the '10 model year.

I would't let any gas attendant put gas in my car,I wonder how many have gotten dents from the gas nozzle with those people filling your tank for you.

NY = Levers have tabs broken off. Have to stand there. Back in the day I used to jam the cap under the lever and then walk inside while the gas would pump. Its definitely a no-no these days...I am sure someone or something caught fire and that was the end of that.

NJ = their levers work and have a lock mechanism - but they dont walk too far away.

As a former petroleum dispensing engineer in high school I'll tell you that most times any damage occurred was due to where someone parked....less room for the attendant to work increases the probability of damage. Park 4 feet out from the pump so there is plenty of room to work and most guys won't have to be contortionists to pump your gas.

Dont stick the nozzle all the way in your filler tube and it wont keep clicking off
