Installing Bluetooth Onstar (OEM) For Hands Free Phone (Easy, Cheap)

I figured it out people and I'm going to share the knowledge here for all who want to add bluetooth hands-free phone support to their existing stereo with oem onstar box. Forgive the poor quality of my pics..

There are two separate onstar modules for use in the 2010 Camaro. They are made by Continental (who bought motorola's car division)
The basic box is part #20842730, it has only two fakra antenna connectors and no bluetooth emblem on this box
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f8...download-4.jpg
The other module is part # 20842731, has three fakra antennas one of which has a small bluetooth antenna attached. The box has a bluetooth emblem on it, some will find the antenna is not included as it is a seperate part: #15938939?
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f8...ti/th_tn-2.jpghere is another view of the connectors on the bluetooth box w/antenna http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f8...ti/th_tn-1.jpg

The procedure for replacing the box is very easy:
First pull the onstar fuse in the interior fuse box (refer to owners manual)
Next remove the glovebox and the protective plastic moulding behind the glove box up high by the dash http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f8..._plastic-1.jpg
This protective piece is held in by 5 torx screws
Once this piece is removed you can plainly see the precious silver onstar box hanging upside down on the left
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f8...redownload.jpg
The box unclips and slides right out of a plastic bezel (easy easy)
Unclip the two fakra wires and the two white small harnesses and switch the boxes http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f8...download-1.jpg
here is the new box connected http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f8...download-2.jpg slide it back into the bezel and reistall the protective piece and glovebox.

Reinstall the Fuse and You're Done! Turn on your car and pair your Bluetooth Phone (My iPhone worked flawlessly, instantly)

Next press the blue onstar button on your rear view mirror and inform them that you have changed your hardware, they can migrate your current account in about 15 minutes.

The only real hurdle you will have is locating a bluetooth onstar box for sale as I do not believe that you can order the part from the dealer. It is my understanding that they will only replace the box in case of theft, fire, or accidental damage... I bought mine from an aftermarket builder who stripped down the car for racing.
OK, I think that's it.

Let me know if I missed anything or if you have any questions, but go easy on me this is my first tutorial post

If I can find a box and get this to work, than you really are THE MAN. I've been telling my wife since July that I will do this for her car.

Everyone, feel free to PM me if you know where I can get a box.

The guys over on the G8 forum that tried to order replacement boxes from gmparts and dealer had their orders cancelled. Let us know if anyone successfully orders this box from any retailer.

Wow...some people don't want the OnStar feature....and people like us are trying to get the full OnStar feature!!! What a world!

Am I missing something here? I totally don't get why this is necessary. Do some of the Camaros with OnStar NOT have bluetooth built in? My 2SS came with it so I just assumed it was standard equipment.. no?

oachalon 11-14-2009 10:31 AM

AdamCzap, you are correct bluetooth is not available on 1SS. I think 1LT cannot get it either.

Exactly, the base model LS, 1LT, and 1SS do not automatically come equipped with bluetooth phone support. As shown in my writeup there are two separate onstar modules. to get bluetooth phone from the factory in base model cars you must order the convenience and connectivity package ($750)

If you're like me and don't care about connecting an ipod but do want phone support than for about a tenth of the price of the C&C package you can do the above procedure and switch your onstar box to one with bluetooth.

GTAHVIT 11-14-2009 09:45 PM

nice!

To add to that, the C&C package is not available for the 1SS so the ONLY way to add it is this (or some other aftermarket solution).
