Front strut bolt torque procedure??? Sounds weird to me..
It says in the manual to torque the 24mm nut to 59 ft lbs and then to turn it another 180 degrees?????????? WHY? Why not just give it one torque spec and be done with it??????
Also......watching this video they spin the nut 180 degrees but it looks like they are not holding the 24mm bolt head??? So wouldn't the bolt just spin 180? https://youtu.be/jXuoPUC7xMw Does't make sense to me.....does anyone know the correct procedure and why they do it this way???? |

Many bolts are TTY on our cars... TTY with angle ° are supposed to be more exact. Head bolts are that way also. One time use and in that’s case, always replace them. -Don |

If you're replacing the bolt then you can use those torque specs (59 ft/lb + 180°) but if you're reusing the bolt then typically you'll give it a grunt or two with some blue loctite as mentioned.
If you do the 59 ft/lb + 180° on a used bolt you may stretch the bolt even more and risk snapping it (bolts stretch when torqued past a certain point, and stretching them again will put them even closer to snapping). TTY bolts are used to make sure a bolt goes on as tight as it needs to; if there is rust in the threads, for example, going to 80 ft/lb or whatever may not make the bolt as tight as it needs to be, but doing 59 ft/lb then 180° makes sure it's tight, no matter the resistance. |
Thanks for the input...........very much appreciated!

Is the link to more information still live Pete? Trying to get more information on changing front MRC struts-such as which nuts/bolts are needing to be replaced as they are single use.

Pretty sure Pete went out of business. I have not seen him on here in quite a while.

I'm not sure about the camaro but some strut bolts are directional as well. Make sure you put them in the same direction they came out.
