Radar Detector Hardwiring

Making this post in case this information might be useful for someone else.
Have a 2020 ZL1 and just recently got a Uniden R8, and wanted to hard to hardwire it into the car vs using the cigarette lighter. I also wanted to wire it into the mirror/console vs running a wire to under the dash (like the Gen5Diy adapter) or even out to the engine bay, as that seemed simplest. This was because I wanted a BlendMount br7-2028. I also ordered a mt-5015 hoping it would work. Might be other cheaper versions, or make your own, but like it as was premade and has inline fuse built-in. Lots of discussions in the forums about not being able to tap in, or with newer cars 2019+ the power cutting out but nothing specific for newer ZL1s. And BlendMount says these are for the C8 Corvette like everywhere, and on one line on the product page mentions the ZL1. But I figured that with the rearview mirror camera there had to be good switched power there. Anyways just in case anyone is wondering the power connector on the mirror looks just like the one from install instructions for the mt-5015. And so far it works just fine, powers on the R8 when you start the car and the mirror turns on. Not sure yet about what happens when you lose traction, but when it has happened prior to this install I don't remember the mirror cutting out. Hopefully this is useful to someone, and helps them avoid the hours of researching I went through. |
I used that same mount but for the harness, I went with the Gen5Diy. https://www.gen5diy.com/collections/...tector-harness
Both were the easiest items ever installed on the car. Mount is extremely versatile and worked like a charm. I have the V1 detector. |
Anyone wire up a radar detector to the newer models with the camera rear view mirror?

So what wires are you guys tapping to get 12+ volts at the mirror? I remember previous posts where people mentioned they could not find 12v at the mirror on the newest Camaros. I'm currently running my V1 from the cigarette lighter plug, but would love to hardwire it without spending the ridiculous $85 for a harness.

I have mine hardwired also, but I notice the detector sometimes cuts out or turns off without me seeing it, likely due to something with the car's voltage.

Now do we know if that is a constant 12V source? People have mentioned the detector turning on and off, like when the traction control kicks on if I remember right? |

I used the gen 5 diy one as well. It plugs in under the passenger dash, runs up the a pillar and along the roof. Super easy, but isn't free, lol.

Thanks, that's helpful. I wonder if the wiring is different if I don't have the camera mirror? I'd check it, but my car is in storage until Spring. |
