Help Me decide:Vette or Camaro

Me and my wife cant decide on a 2010 Camaro or an '05/'06 vette with less than 20K miles. We dont have a specific vette in mind, we've just been looking. We couldnt (really) afford a Z06, it would just be the LS2 or whatever with 400 hp. Wife wants a vette, Im torn. What made you decide on a '10 camaro? Price is a factor (of course) but we got $10K (up to $17K) to put down. We're 22 and 21 so insurance is a concern. No kids yet, so we dont have to buy whats most practical, although having the option to put some people in the back seat is nice. Any one care to help me with the pro's and con's.:iono: Im sure I wont get a biased answer at CAMARO5 ;)

Why tho?

headpunter 10-02-2008 10:35 AM

it will step on the toes of a 2005 base corvette for fun driving, and be more practical for every da driving

Sizzox 10-02-2008 10:36 AM

Well im ordering a camaro and when pricing comes out and i think its a kinda high ill deff be on the look out for some used vettes and if i find a nice one i might cancel the order and get the vette idk but i got my heart set on the camaro cause its a muscle car not a sports car

MerlinZero 10-02-2008 11:01 AM

I'm in the same boat man, I'm looking at an '06 Z06 or ordering the Camaro. Price doesnt really come into it. I just am trying to figure out which way it goes.

I think the deciding factor is going to be if, or if not i can get the 427 block in the camaro from factory. if not, i think i'll end up getting a vette.

the other thing i've looked at is, what the cars actually mean.....See i think... again think i want a Muscle car.... in which case i'm all for the Camaro... the Camaro is a muscle car hands down. no questions asked.

Where the Vette I see as more of a hyper car. its the top end......

So the question back to you, what are you looking to compete with? Mustangs/Challengers or Porsches/Maseratis?

carfansince73 10-02-2008 11:17 AM

Well you said you don't have kids... yet. If they are in the near future, you are going to be stuck getting a another car or selling the Vette.

If safety is a factor, then the Camaro wins easily. It's heavier and has curtain air bags that are not even offered on the Vette.

srtclg1007 10-02-2008 11:39 AM

Not many supercars in my area, lol. I took a drive in a challenger srt8 the other and I was actually impressed. I want something that sounds sweet and when I wanna get up and go, no little punks can hang with me. I want POWER, but I also want the next car I drive to last me forever. i plan on taking excellent care of it. I got a car Ima drive not daily but ever so often to keep the miles off of my main car...... So even a 400 hp vette would smoke a 422 hp Camaro?

i think that is a pretty tall order to ask for from the factory, as there isnt any way it would be available you could look at a crate swap. the ls7 uses the same ECU so it would be a direct drop in, and you can sell your ls3, there is definately a market for it. if your not down for that you may have to look else where. becacsue the ls7 is on its way out and it. also the more engine options you offer from the factory the more it costs them in overhead and factory space as they have to have more engines beside the line to put into the car as well as the low production numbers involved with making the ls7 make it hard for it to be offered because they would not be able to keep up with possible demand. only way to stem the tide of ls7 orders would be a much higher price tag (higher then the difference in the engine cost).

tl:dr It wont come from the factory with a ls7

Well it depends on what you are looking for. Granted my opinion is biased....but I am buying my wife a Camaro as soon as it comes out. That being said, the Corvette is in a completely different league. Now in fairness I haven't driven the Camaro, and I haven't even driven a standard C6 Corvette. I have only the Z06 to reference. I can tell you this, I love this car more each time I get in it. For those of you begging for a 500+hp Camaro, trust me when I say, a 500+hp car is a beast, granted my car only weighs about 3200 lbs. The Z06 offers more road noise, engine noise, and a bit rougher ride then a standard Corvette, that being said, it is truly a supercar, and we should be happy to have cup holders. The point is, if you are more interested in comfort, and then performance, the standard vette is the way to go. If performance and looks is your goal, then the Z06 wins hands down. Now I realize you asked about Corvette or Camaro. I can tell you that either will be a great choice, but I would be careful to compare them to close to each other. They are different cars for a different market. A side benefit to the Corvette is better gas mileage and better performance. I think even the stock Corvette will beat the SS Camaro. They both have hte same hp, but the Vette weighs quite a bit less. If you wife wants the Corvette, then get the vette, then when the Camaro comes out, get one of those as well :)

Get the Camaro. That back seat will come in handy when you least expect it.

Georgie 10-02-2008 12:26 PM

depends if you can do 2 seats or not; if you can do 2 seats go with the corvette

SS4EVER 10-02-2008 12:50 PM

Umm really? Corvette > Camaro.

I'd get a Corvette over a Camaro in a heartbeat. But that's just me.

baileyrx 10-02-2008 01:14 PM

dont get an ls2, look for a newer ls3...

Yeahyouknwit 10-02-2008 01:20 PM

I also had the same dilemma between an 05 vet 3lt and the new camaro. I believe im going with the camaro because i see myself needing a back seat in a few years for a childs seat. I dont want to buy a vette just to have to turn around and sell it in a year or two when i have a kid.

Yeahyouknwit 10-02-2008 01:20 PM

ls3 i mean

srtclg1007 10-02-2008 01:25 PM

The LS3 in the vette is 435 hp. right?? Im really still undecided. I got until the middle of this month to decide, cause if Im getting a 'maro, Im gonna order it so i can have it by March. Camaro is more practical. Parts would be cheaper for repair. It would also lose more value than a used corvette. My wife will let me get whatever I want. We could afford a brand new Z06 but I would feel guilty getting that, so thats out of the question. Either $30K-$35K '05 or '06 vette, or a $30K-$35K '10 Camaro.

Yeahyouknwit 10-02-2008 01:36 PM

the 3ls vette i looked at was an 05 with 460 RHP with 6k miles on it. i know once i drive the camaro im going to with i had the vette engine but i cant do the 2 seats so like you said it is more practical to get the camaro and thats why i believe, not 100% tho, that im going to get the new SS

Camaro_Corvette 10-02-2008 02:31 PM

Huh, LOL, Good luck, I have been asking myself this for a while now!

i decided to get both, but deciding which to get first kinda sucks. I think i'm going with camaro first vette second.

The_Stache 10-02-2008 02:36 PM

Wait untill pricing is released. If the camaro is priced like a mustang.. go camaro... if its hitting used vette territory 32+k... then go vette... Unless you need the backseat.

Im in the same situation.. backseat is a non issue, just me and the wife, we both currently have regular cab trucks, no back seat now.. no back seat needed (never having kids).

SO at this point for me its all dependant on pricing.

srtclg1007 10-02-2008 04:06 PM

I think thats a good plan. I'll go ahead and order a Camaro. Then in January if pricing too much in 'vette territory, I'll just cancel the order, and start looking for a vette. Im kinda hoping I can get a 2SS for about $30K. That seems feasible.

CamaroScotty 10-02-2008 04:22 PM

The 08 on C6 vette drives so much better than the previous (more HP, better shifting, better steering), it almost makes them obsolete.

Go with the Camaro.

I agree. The 2008 Corvette was the first one I really wanted. Mega upgrades, mid-model run refresh. LS3 engine, etc., etc.

You can get a brand new 2008 Corvette cheap. Some are sold for $39,995. None are stripped, they all have decent equipment. Just no side air bags on the entry 1LT model. Start at 2LT. But, they may try to screw you on financing, and/or trade-in value.

I'm going to sell my trades, and get outside financing, so I just hand the dealer a check.

Corvette weighs 3217lbs, Camaro 3960lbs. One of the bigger differences. Near same horsepower from LS3.

I want both Camaro and Corvette. Time will tell.

Mblock66 10-02-2008 04:33 PM

To the OP on this I would think seriously about what you want out of the car. They are going to be two totally different applications. The vette is more refined in almost every way HOWEVER you are talking about a 4-5 model year old vette by the time you purchase and it doesn't seem like the right choice. Right now you can get an 09 vette coupe from the dealer for 39,999 with the 1lt package and around 48k for the 3lt pkg. They will deal on the leftover 08s even more since they are drowning in them.

With that said the 2008 used market for a 3lt is in the 35k range already. Since the updated 2008 has the LS3 it has pushed the LS2 2007 and older models really far down in resale. You can pick up a 2007 Ls2 used for around 32k now if not cheaper depending on the mileage. There is no reason to look back to an 05 or 06 model. By mid next year when you want to compare the two you shouldn't even be looking at used LS2's anymore, you WILL NOT be happy knowing you bought a poor resale dying technology car. My recomendation is in June 2009 only look at used 2008 coupe which will be in the low 30's which should be the same as the Camaro SS.

I am on the fence with this too. I want the vette and the fiannce knows this but she thinks cars are a total waste of $ and even though I can totally afford a vette now she "suggested" that the $ would go a long way in the beginning of our marriage rather then having it tied up in a vette. And I can't really argue that. So I am waiting until after we are married to revisit this. Which is July 3rd next year. At this point I will check out the G8 GXP, Camaro SS, and used 06/07 Z06 vettes. I feel for you but it is a tough choice. Just don't go LS2 you will regret it in a matter of months

IROCZJEFF 10-02-2008 04:34 PM

I am in the same boat. I was pretty upset when the new Camaro didn't have 505HP or a supercharged motor. I started thinking used 2008 Z06 in Jet Stream blue. I planned on spending $50,000 on the big dog Camaro I can get a Z06 used for another $5,000. The new Camaro is a nice car but it is missing the power! I don't want to get killed by a Shelby. I am not sure what I am going to do. I have driven a new Z06 and I have to say it is very very nice. If you are after power go Z06. if you are after good power and a great car go new Camaro. Just my thoughts. Jeff
