The brake pedal has to be down when you tighten the bleeder, or when you release the brake you let in air. This method works but you have to have 2 people.

I put mine 16- 3/8s inch from the top of the hood (closest to the windshield). It is #4 in the directions on page One. Others have made it back a little more. That measurement isn't set in stone....
