Might be coming from rear diff especially if you have not changed the diff fluid. I changed mine out at 1,500 miles and has never whined but some who have not has encountered the whine.

I agree the 1LE has no real understeer problems it is a very balanced car going into a curve but might have a little understeer if you don't let off and tap the brake to let the nose dive a little...
