Careful if you want to put another dimmer on the dash-lighting circuit. Most of the imported dimmers are common positive. We ended up building common-negative versions for this.

Also, a lot of things in the car are on "circuit breakers" (not fused). Check for shorts. The easy way is to disconnect your tap and see if the dome comes back.
