My car (M6 1LE) did the exact same thing when in 5 and 6 between 1,000-2,000 rpm. Turned out to be a bad o2 sensor causing bad air-fuel mixtures in those RPMs.

I turn all the aids off. Just 2,000rpm and lift off clutch gradually, almost as soon as the clutch grabbed though it snapped.

Also! Update on rear diff. I wasn't expecting this, turns out it was the "posi-trac" that blew apart. According to the dealership the ring and pinion are undamaged. That to me is totally unexpected....
