While the factory Hurst shift lever will physically fit into a non-Hurst bracket and reduce throw... the shifting will not be as smooth without the Hurst bracket and may even feel somewhat notchy...

Yes- the factory GM/Hurst shifter can be replace with the aftermarket Hurst without changing the bracket. This is due to the way the main pivot bearing is housed/retained in the aftermarket shifter....
