Well, the intake by itself doesn't cool the air. The point is that it brings coolER or coldER air to the engine vs the stock intake, meaning it doesn't heat up as much on the way and/or isn't drawing...

I believe those with FI and the HFCs have had issues with the catalyst innards blowing out after a while. Either stock cats or no cats are better with FI, IIRC.
