Found out I'm missing another part. I don't have the coupler that goes to the throttle body. Hopefully I can find one locally. It's a 3.5" to 4". None of the regular parts stores have that size.

When I had my Whipple, I had an issue with the tensioner. They sent a new one right away. A week isn't very long. I'm sure they'll get you taken care of.

You don't have to remove the head. Either put the piston at TDC on the ones you're working on to ensure you don't drop a valve, or use compressed air in the spark plug hole to keep the valves up.

If it got that hot, it was because the pad fell off and got stuck in the pressure plate. Either way, you said no one has ever had to have one rebuilt and as you know, that's not true.
