I know it isn't required. They probably thought it was easier to pull the engine to knock them both out. There is no reason you can't do a converter by pulling the trans.

You can easily lay down those numbers on 2.5". 3" will make more power, but I'd worry about other mods first. The exhaust won't hold you back from hitting your goals.

Ls3/ls7 lifters are the same. The only set of hydraulic lifters I would use are johnson's with axle oiling. Morel and lunati are pretty popular as well. I'm getting ready to pull my heads any day now...
