I live in Ohio, another that requires it, I've used the "holder on b/o" several times, got my plate in a ziplock on the dash, doesn't obstruct the view. It's worked on my 93 pacecar sinse it was new.

There is a sensor on the mirror, just cut out a black circle and cover it. It also controls the driver side mirror from the rearview. My 2002 Trailblazer LTZ has it and works fine.
