Pop out the switch (you dont need a special tool just use youre nails on one side).
once you got it out,
remove the back cover( you can use a small screw driver to pry it),
Be carefull not to loose the 2 small springs that will come out
there will be a round spring (that surrounds the dial), all you need to do is cut the end of the spring, this will allow you to set the dial to off with out the knob returning it back to auto.
Just leave it in the off position and turn them on manually when you need to.

This is just what I was looking for, I for one hate automatic lights. When its dark out, I'll turn the lights on, just like I've always done in my '91 and '95. I went the extra step and removed the spring instead of cutting it, this way, I can re-install it if I ever wanted to for some reason. Thanks for sharing this method!
