The switchbacks are awesome, but can't be driven very fast, I tried many times, as many of the switchbacks are blind to the other traffic coming at you. Many boaters take their rides to the lake and you have to deal with a truck, and boat trailer. Now a smaller group who would want to go would not be a problem.
If you want to see excellent mountains then Tortilla Flats would be it. I took my avator pic at the base of Red Mountain.
You can always take 188 to Globe and take the 60 back. There is a 20 mile stretch between Miami and Superior where you can go fast through the mountains.
