The way I do it is kind of make a ring or spiral on the pad. Then I tap the pad around on the paint to spread it around. Then turn on the machine and actually apply it.

I use a lot more than a dime size, bit I also work a much larger section than 2x2. On a Camaro my sections are:

Divide the hood in half. 2 sections
Front fender panel (smaller, less sealant)
Each door is one section and hit the mirrors
Divide roof in half and hit the pillars
Each rear quarter
Trunk lid
Rear fascia
Front fascia

Does that make sense? I'm doing a truck tomorrow I can take some pics if its not too late.
