The best thing I have done is pay off my car loans all the way versus just recylcing into another car every few years. It's not as glamorous but gives you a lot more options on the other side.
I basically drove a 2004 Subaru for 9 years to pay it off and my other car off too. Went into 2015 owning both outright with a lot more options.
