Actually, I've heard about being kind of rough with them up front and they react well. I probably wouldn't go to 6K within the first 500mi but after that I think, change the oil and get after it.

Yes but this engine is a dog until you break it in. I would still recommend breaking it in as per the user manual but after the first oil change, it's off with the gloves....
