This testing is common in NASCAR, IndyCar, ALMS, F1, etc. Depending on what they are trying to test they can replay a ‘generic’ profile or specific tracks. The rigs can be 4 or 7 post, the 7 post rigs simulate braking, acceleration, cornering, road irregularity, downforce. The testing can look very violent depending on how bumpy the profile is. Teams commonly heat the dampers to simulate on track conditions more precisely.
DSSV was used by Newman / Haas in Champ Car / IndyCar amongst other IndyCar, ALMS, etc. teams. Andretti used them for a while but are using different dampers now. Data is collected and analyzed and damper settings are adjusted to determine the effects.
