They came very close...the '70 COPO Nova, LT-1 engined (then the Z/28 engine), which was the basis for the '70 Yenko Nova. Others besides Yenko ordered them, as well, but very limited production.

Which by the way is a 300 hp 350 engine that turned in a 13.00. The 396 Nova's were in the mid to low 12's with no mods except a set of slicks. The old street tires of that day were what kept the ET's a lot slower.
