My friend has a new V6 with the longer gearing since it's a base model. My other friend has an 04 GT Convertible and raced him. I'd say the extra weight disadvantage cancels out the gear disadvantage. Anyway, the V6 won every time.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, they were both auto, and I'm pretty sure those old 4 speeds sucked a lot so that could be part of it.
