While it's not totally necessary to drop the pan, it does help a lot to have a bit more room there! Dropping the oil pan isn't so bad anyway it only takes a few minutes.
The flexible gear wrench will help you a lot, once you get it loosened up, I like to put a zip tie around it so I have something to hang on to so I don't drop it.
