OP, the reason it is technically only for off-road use is that, in temps below 32 degrees, moisture can collect it in and eventually run into the crankcase. That moisture will then compromise your oil and be bad for the engine. Theoretically.

So, if you drive year round, you will want to take it off in the winter. Otherwise, there are no negative side effects .
