And someone like myself I have I would say a decent understanding of motors/engines and my future father-in-law has all of the necessary tools to put the cams in for sure but all of his experience is with carbureted engines. Would we be able to do this or is this simply over my head.

Gas ???? I have a 1LS and since our gears ratio is different I would think that you would be saving tons of money on Gas. I barely get 16mpg cause that is mixed with city and a little bit of highway. That is with me not over revving the engine and not having a lead foot.
