open loop = no readings from the o2s and other equipment
closed loop = readings from everything
however, the AIR system pumps air into the exhaust stream to help heat up the catalytic converter when the car is first started. the hiss that he heard when he first started the car would be that, but the AIR pump only runs for a very short time. but the EGR does not differentiate between open and closed loop. it is actuated by a solenoid from the computer to open the egr valve to allow more exhaust into the intake to decrease emissions.
however his problem is a leak on the intake manifold gasket/fuel injector o-ring. he and I have been pm'ing each other about this and he got new intake manifold gaskets but he never told me if he got new injector o-rings as well.
