This is correct...unless the vehicle can advance timing to take advantage of the higher octane, which is the only thing an engine not designed for premium fuel can possibly do.
Higher octane fuel has a higher point at which ignition occurs. Typically, engines using premium when it is not designed to do so results in higher emissions because of more unburned fuel.
Your opinion, and mileage, may vary. I use 87 in mine without a second thought. I also do not lug my engine.
