As with anything they're fine as long as they're used properly... but use them incorrectly (as you see 99% of people at car shows grinding them into their paint) and they'll cause damage.
Allow the fibers to only lightly touch the finish, they should dangle full length with the tips just barely touching.
Work from one end of a panel to the end, shake out, repeat. Don't do back forth or anything else.
