If you don't have a passport and don't particularly need one and spending $130 to get one expedited can get your DL renewed.

I applied and received my EDL (Enhanced Drives License) and got it back in less than 2 weeks. But, all you really need is your birth certificate. Remember that a US citizen can NOT be refused entry back into the US. They may give you a bit of a hard time, but they have to let you back in. A lot of publicity has been out about the passport issue and the EDL but they will let you back with a
good birth certificate. Make sure it has a Raised Seal on it. If it's an old one, go to your local City Clerks office and get a new one. Around here it's about $10.
