No, believe it or not it was a modern car, an Olds Aurora. GM did it on many of the G/H/K body cars, Lucerne, DTS, etc. I never thought much about the safety aspect, other than venting fumes. The part I thought was stupid is that these cars had pretty nice interiors and the average GM mechanic would no doubt have grease all over the leather and carpet if they replaced the battery.

I would never buy one with the battery in the passenger compartment...
