The trunk isn't that unusual of a place for the battery. At least not after my last car. It was under the rear seat.
I also read the manuals when I get a car, especially the Camaro. I was so excited when I got the car I wanted to soak up as much Camaro goodness as possible. I might have slept out in the the garage if my wife wouldn't think I was crazy.
