yeah, it's not exactly as black and white as less cylinders = better gas mileage
I bet putting a 4 pot in this car would get terrible mileage beacuse it would have to work so hard to move the thing around. I know my s10 originally had a 2.5 L and when I swapped in the 6.6 L I didn't lose any gas mileage really in the city because the engine hardly had to work at all to move that truck around. went everywhere at 1200 rpm rather than 2500.
and you have to take into account that the engine isn't ALWAYS running on 4. so it'll be some sort of average between 4 and 8 depending how hard you drive it.
