Yes the flaps come out of that channel - first there are a couple of stitches on each side that need to break as you pull the flap up gently. Try to remember the orientation of the flaps as you pull up - that will help on re-install. It might take a couple of tries to get the flaps to snap-in but you'll hear a snap as they lock in that channel.
