I used a set from Fry's (LED's for case modding) and they were about $12 each. They came in a clear tube and I was able to put the tube in a clamp or something already molded into the cover and they hold tight without any wire ties. I can roll the tube in any direction to control the brightness if needed.

That's pretty cool
. I was thinking either a tube or a flat strip of something that you could adhere the lights to then attach at either end. The tube idea works best, no issue with the tape failing and like you mention you can adjust the direction/intensity of the light. very nice.
