The longest they could be, and still look ok, would be up to the 'mailslot'.
But stripes should never go all the way down the front and back of a car. There should be a definitive BEGINNING & END to the stripes (ie- end of the hood is where they begin and end at the edge of the trunk) otherwise they look stupid.
EDIT: IMO The Bumblebee stripes are exactly how stripes should be. The blue 3rd Gen shown above is how they should NOT be (imo).
