The best way is to roll in together. If someone is close behind I don't think you'll have a problem holding a spot for a short time, but there won't be any cones or lawn chairs sitting out saving spots while folks are out to dinner and such.
First come first serve... mixing it up is part of the fun too, getting to meet new folks.
