The top of the Camaro front struts are floating design. That metal washer hat that is seen from inside the engine bay at the top of the strut tower is a simple retainer that keeps the strut from falling down when the car is jacked up. There is a rubber ring that runs around the perimeter of the retainer plate that scuffs the top surface of the strut tower and marks it up but that is completely normal. The gap under the retainer washer/hat widens over time, that is normal also. The strut tower shape and strength was increased after a couple years in Gen 5; and Chevy also later fully threaded the strut tower brace holes even if the car did not get a strut tower brace put on at factory.
