You learn to love the ghetto look of the track tires not tucking when they reward you with fast laps, LOL. I think they're fine for a dedicated track set up, but for the street I agree with you that I wouldn't go this wide. I run my stock wheels and tires on the street.
I don't think you can go more offset, you're stuck with reducing the wheel and tire width. The Z/28 has fender flares to help tuck the 305s, which also looks kind of goofy to me. It's a trade-off, depends on how dedicated to performance you want to make your Camaro.
