AMP Ground

I have replaced my factory AMP with a new one. When I originally hooked it up I had the ground wire connected directly to the battery. Someone told me that was not good so we moved the connection to the same bolt that the battery terminal connects to the body with.

The thing is now I get a lot of noise (sounds like an electrical motor running) when the radio is on. I am sure that this is due to a bad ground as when I had it connected directly to the battery terminal I had no such noise. The noise is coming from the speakers and goes away when I turn the car off.

The sound system also sounds a lot better with the car off and just the radio on.

So my question is this, is it really that bad to hook the ground directly to the terminal on the battery? Should I move the Ground back? Where is a good spot to ground the AMP?

BTW I am using 4 AWG wire for power and ground.

Thanks in advance.
