There is absolutely no way you can tell how phisically/chemically "dirty" the oil is by looking at it. The only way is to send a sample in for analysis. Oil turning dark has zero validity on its real condition.
If you run Mobil1 or a true synthetic and change it at 3000 miles you are wasting money and resources.
