Yes, the can will get hot it is ingesting air and oil mist from the valve covers. The RX can does work fine, it's the check valves that have been suspect. You could replace these check valve connections and continue to use the can or just check to see if the check valves are passing flow from passenger valve cover to the vacuum side. Most work fine.
For a non-FI application there should only be an ounce or two in the can per oil change. More if you are running the car very hard.
