Like you stated. Accelerate hard and then slow down but don't engine brake.

Also take the occasional on/off ramp.

NEVER SET YOUR ENGINE ON CRUISE CONTROL!!!! Worse thing you could do when breaking in an engine!!!

You need to vary RPM's.
