Can you replace the mirrors on the sides with a convex-shaped mirror (curved bowing outward) that will give you a wider angle view, like a wide angle lens? It would take some getting used to the distortion, but it might help. I've seen the little ones you can glue on big truck mirrors to make them like bi-focals, but this would be an obstruction on small car mirrors.
